Job Search Tips: Efforts I Made to Find a Job in Tough Times

In today’s world, finding a job is no easy task, especially if you don’t have a wide network of connections. I’ve been through that phase too—feeling confused, depressed, and often blaming myself for not being able to land a job. Amidst the frustration, here are some efforts I made:

Revamping My CV

I reviewed and revamped my CV to ensure it matched market demands. I also focused on highlighting the skills I included in it. At the time, the job field I was targeting—accounting—did not align with my previous experience. So, I studied several job postings in the accounting field and observed what makes a great accountant’s CV. I then adjusted my CV to better reflect my experience.

Improving My Skills

In addition to fixing my CV, I studied the skills possessed by professional accountants. One of them was mastering accounting software. To do this, I learned through YouTube tutorials and tried out trial versions of various accounting programs. This helped me gain a basic understanding of the software commonly used in the field.

Being Selective Before Applying for Jobs

Before applying for any job, I always considered a few important factors:

  • Location: This was crucial. I avoided applying to jobs that were too far from home, as high transportation costs could become an issue even if I got the job.
  • Salary and Benefits: Not all job postings include details about salary and benefits, but if they did, these were major considerations for me. After all, the purpose of working is to earn a living, so salary and benefits determine how flexible I can be with the job responsibilities.
  • Job Description: This was the final consideration. If the job description matched my skills and experience, and the salary offered was reasonable, then I would apply for the position.

Reflection on My Experience

Despite all these efforts, the results were still not what I had hoped for. In the end, I chose to be grateful for my previous job, as it ultimately fulfilled my needs. Through this experience, I learned that a job is not the ultimate goal, but rather a means to earn the sustenance that God has already determined for us. Nevertheless, I have no regrets about the efforts I made. I know I gave it my best shot.

Expanding My Network

After resigning and focusing on freelancing, I realized there was one thing I had neglected in the past: expanding my connections. Because of this, I am now actively blogging, using social media, and engaging on LinkedIn to grow my network and meet new people. The more people know about me and my skills, the greater my chances of finding the right job.
